Trusted. Dedicated. Innovative.
We are helping guide the nation in the safe distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
Operation Warp Speed
The CDC added Community Pharmacy to the federal list of trusted providers after learning about the company’s long history of advocating for seniors, expertly delivering high-touch pharmaceutical services, and its ability to operate with logistical precision that’s critical for safe, effective distribution. Starting at the end of December, Community Pharmacy will help guide the nation in the safe distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines in two states, Nebraska and Iowa. Community Pharmacy is one of the seven other long-term care pharmacies across the United States.
The Federal Drug Administration will reviewed and approved the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer on December 10, and Moderna is scheduled to be approved on December 17. Once the vaccines are approved, they will be ready for shipping to Community Pharmacy within 48 hours. Community Pharmacy will provide appropriate cold storage for the vaccine(s); report required vaccination data to local, state, territorial and federal jurisdictions within 72 hours of administering each dose; and follow all Centers for Medicare and Medicaid COVID 19 operational standards. To administer the required two doses, Community Pharmacy will schedule and coordinate three on-site clinic visits, over approximately two months. The majority of residents and staff should be vaccinated by January 31.
Community Pharmacy accepted the request to administer COVID-19 vaccinations through Operation WARP Speed. Why? Our existing knowledge and trusted relationships inside the LTC facilities makes us an expert to carry out this humanitarian effort. We are nimble and able to quickly adapt to changing government rules pertaining to Operation Warp Speed. Our pharmacy already has established delivery and service infrastructure, therefore, we do not have to recreate new distribution channels. Current integrated access to resident health records prior to and following administration of the vaccine will make it easier to collect and report data. Community Pharmacy has been administering flu shot clinics inside LTC facilities for over 10 years, which proves the set up to administer vaccination a known successful model. The manner in which the vaccine clinics will be similar for our partners who already understand the process, as well as our staff, which will ensure a smooth clinic.
At Community Pharmacy, we have coined the honor to administer COVID-19 vaccinations for our LTC partners internally as “Project Hug.” Why Project Hug? Community Pharmacy will do we can to help in getting any and all residents in our long-term care facilities the opportunity to start hugging their loved ones again.
COVID-19 Vaccine Facility Information
Bamlanivimab: Monoclonal Antibody Therapy
Community Pharmacy was asked to partner with the University of Nebraska Medical Center to assist with compounding and distribution of the monoclonal antibody therapy, Bamlanivimad, for skilled nursing facilities in Nebraska. Bamlanivimab has been authorized through an EUA as a single dose administration to help prevent hospitalization for COVID-19 infected patients with mild to moderate symptoms and is encouraged for use in the long-term care sector. Per current guidelines, this therapy has to be given within 10 days of onset of symptoms. Community Pharmacy is currently working to pilot programs in order to provide this for our partners in Iowa through both the National Home Infusion Association and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.
As your trusted pharmacy partner, we want to address some questions you may have following the FDA announcement on November 9th regarding the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) issued for the investigational monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy, bamlanivimab. We are optimistic about the vaccines and therapeutics being developed in response to the COVID-19 crisis and we will continue to update you as we move through this dynamic time together.
